It turns out that this is due to them changing from one type to another as they travel. I find it fascinating that a neutrino starts as one thing and then changes into something else without needing to interact with anything along the way. A highlight for me was working on a neutrino experiment in Japan that was the first to actually detect muon neutrinos changing to electron neutrinos.
