According to a composition I wrote in elementary school that I rediscovered decades later, my aspiration for life was to sell vegetables. Clearly, that changed. By 14, I was captivated by elementary particles and their mix of simplicity and complexity – and their implied promise that understanding them would provide the comprehensive explanation. I had the idea that the ultimate truth does exist, and the path to it unfolds through them. I don’t believe in ultimate truths any more, but the charm is still there. I enjoy working on DUNE because it gives me the feeling that our collective achievements will be foundation of imperishable knowledge.
